Shannon Phillips won re-election Tuesday as Union County clerk.

Incumbent County Clerk Shannon Phillips will continue to be the clerk for the next term, as she was re-elected Tuesday in the general election.

Phillips won Tuesday’s election with about 55 percent of the votes. She was one of two candidates running for the clerk’s position, winning with 6,774 votes cast for her.

Phillips said she was feeling happy and excited Tuesday night after the final unofficial results were announced.

“I felt really good about it,” Phillips said about the election. “(Goldie Hilburn) ran a really good race. She did well, but I think my experience in the end just won out.”

Hilburn received about 44 percent of votes, with 5,393 total votes cast for her.

Hilburn could not be reached Tuesday night for comment.

Phillips, who has held the position of Union County clerk for 10 years, said her experience in the office was one of her key issues. She said there are many changes coming to the clerk’s office in the next term and feels that her experience is needed.

Phillips said she wanted to tell the people of Union County “thank you.”

“I’m honored to serve Union County,” she said. “I think of myself strictly as a servant and I feel strongly that when I originally took office, God placed me there and he will move me when he wants to and I kind of approached my campaign that way. I tried to campaign as much as I could, but really I just had faith.”

Phillips said she also wanted to thank the poll workers for their work Tuesday and the people in Union County for voting.

“I think El Dorado and Union County had a fabulous turnout this year,” she said. “We’re going to move forward and provide the best service that we can to the people of Union County.”
