Karen Scott will be the next Union County tax collector, taking the position from incumbent tax collector and opponent Paula Beard.

Scott won Tuesday’s election with about 55 percent of the votes.

Scott said she was feeling very excited about becoming the next Union County tax collector.

Scott was one of two candidates running for the tax collector position, winning with 906 votes cast for her.

“I’m happy that the support was in my favor and we took the win, we got the victory,” she said.

Beard received about 44 percent of votes.

“It’s been a long, hard campaign for both of us,” Beard said. “I wish (Scott) well. I’m going to continue to do my job serving the taxpayers and that’s what I’m concentrating on right now.”

Beard added that she felt Scott will do a good job as the tax collector.

Scott’s key issue on running for tax collector was having the assessor’s office and the tax collector’s office work together and to “restore confidence and respect back into the courthouse.”

“There are so many things that have to be fixed and there are so many problems that have to be taken care of, so it’s going to be a lot,” Scott said. “I’m ready for the challenge.”
