Local letter carriers will participate in the 26th annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive today.

Anyone wishing to participate should leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable food, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta, rice or cereal, next to their mailbox prior to regular mail delivery today. All food items should be in non-breakable containers, such as boxes or cans.

Letter carriers will take the donations from each home to the Salvation Army, an agency of the United Way of Union County.

Stamp Out Hunger is the nation’s largest single-day food drive, with letter carriers having collected more than 1.5 billion pounds of food from homes since its inception. Union County postal customers contributed more than 3,000 pounds to the Salvation Army’s food pantry during last year’s drive.
