The El Dorado Historic District Commission is expected to hear a Certificate of Appropriateness request when they convene for a regular meeting at noon today in the second-floor conference room of City Hall.

The COA is for another project for the Murphy Arts District.

COAs are required for most exterior projects that are proposed within the city’s commercial historic district.

MAD has added pots and planters to the outdoor dining area of the Griffin Restaurant on Locust Street. The request would be for a post-COA from the historic district commission.

The COA five pots and 13 planters are designed to provide screening from the sidewalk; add color; and grow ornamental plants, as well as herbs and gardens to be used in the Griffin Restaurant.

The five pots are white and approximately 3 feet tall and 3 feet wide.

Three of the pots align with each of the three columns on the building’s northern facade, and two of the pots will be placed squarely within each structural bay.

The 13 planters are 13 inches tall. Eight are 6 feet long and five are 4 feet long.

Since starting construction on the multi-media arts district 2016, MAD has submitted several COAs to the historic district commission, the most recent of which was for new signage for the Griffin Restaurant and Music Hall.

Phase 1 of the $100-million-plus project was completed this spring, and Phase 2, which includes the renovation and expansion of the Rialto Theater and the development of the McWilliams building, Washington and Locust, into an art gallery that will include guest quarters for artists.

Also on the historic district commission’s agenda today is a request to begin the nomination process to place the Oakland House, 3800 Calion Road, on the National Register of Historic Place.

A site survey has been completed on the house, which is owned by Mickey and Diane Murfee.

Commissioners are expected to hear an update on an ongoing project to print new downtown walking tour brochures.
