City Arrests

• Jaquez L. Whatley, 28, 1500 N. Martin Luther King, was arrested June 1 on an Arkansas Parole Board warrant for absconding.

• Bernard S. Dickerson, 33, of 726 E> Block, was arrested May 29 on an Arkansas Parole Board warrant for absconding.

City Reports

• A woman told police June 1 that someone attempted to break into her vehicle at her residence in the 500 block of Ondo Lane. The woman noted scratches and puncture marks inside the doorframe of the vehicle.

• An employee of Brookshire’s, 220 S. West Ave., reported June 1 the forgery of two checks totaling $1,184.74. Police said two suspects — one a black male and the other a white male — were captured on surveillance cashing the checks on May 11.

• A woman reported May 31 the theft of a handgun from her residence in the 2600 block of Deer Crossing. The woman said she learned the theft occurred, allegedly, on May 24, and she provided possible suspect information. Police said they recovered the firearm from the suspect’s father, who said the gun fell from the suspect’s pants during an altercation that occurred outside city limits. The suspect’s father said he seized the firearm at the time, and police said the Union County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the altercation had occurred. Police said they returned the gun and a magazine to the complainant. Officers said the suspect, a juvenile, was scheduled for an interview with detectives.

• On May 30, a woman told officers that someone broke into her residence in the 400 block of Hudson and stole a video game system and 10 video games.

• An employee of McDonald’s, 1730 N. West Ave., reported May 31 that three counterfeit $20 bills were passed at the business.

• Officers were called just after 7 a.m. on May 31 to Chicken Express, 2209 N. West Ave., reference to a burglary. A safe containing $1,200 cash was reported missing. Police said several items inside the business had been disturbed and the employee entrance door shattered. Police said it appeared the suspect(s) used a junction box to shut off power to the business prior to entering the building. About five hours earlier, officers responded to a report of a burglary at Arby’s, 1000 N. West Ave. Police said the suspect(s) appeared to have shut off the power to the business, noting that the burglar alarm sounded after officers exited the building. Police said a glass door and a cash register were damaged. No items were reported missing.

• On May 30, police were called to Day & Nite convenience store, 1207 W. Hillsboro, in reference to an armed robbery. An employee told police that two males entered the store, having approached the business from the east, and yelled for everyone “to get on the ground.” She noted that only she and a relative were inside the store at the time. She said the suspects ordered her to open the safe, and when she told them she did not have access to the safe, one of the males, who had a handgun, told her to open the cash register. The employee said she complied and attempted to activate the panic button, but the suspect pointed the gun at her face and told her not to touch the button. She said he then ordered the second suspect, who was not armed, to grab the cash from the till, and the second male took a stack of $1 and $5 bills. The suspect with the gun swiped several $20 bills and pulled the cash drawer, causing several coins to fall to the floor, the employee said, adding that the suspects then fled the business, running east. The second woman who was inside the business provided a similar account of the incident, saying the suspects ordered her to get on the floor. Police said surveillance video footage corroborated the employee’s description of the suspects. The suspect with the gun covered his face with a red shirt, and the other suspect’s head and face were covered with a blue shirt with his eyes visible. Police said both suspects were wearing black shorts, were average height and “athletically built.” Officers said they recovered evidence from the store and in the area that is adjacent to the business. The suspects reportedly took an undetermined amount of cash.

• Police responded on May 30 to reports of several vehicle break-ins at Murphy USA, 200 Peach. A woman said the suspect(s) left a package of cigarettes and a pocket knife in the driver’s seat of her vehicle. Two other women told police that change was missing from the cup-holders of their vehicles.

• A woman told police On May 30 that someone broke into her residence in the 1300 block of West Cedar and stole two TVs, a microwave oven and a Bluetooth speaker.

• On May 30, a man reported the theft of a blue pit bull puppy from a kennel at his residence in the 700 block of West Fifth. He said the puppy is 15 weeks old and gray with a white stripe on its forehead and a white patch on its chest.

• A woman told police on May 30 that someone broke into her vehicle at her residence in the 1600 block of Short East Hillsboro and stole the radio. She said the dashboard was also damaged.

• Officers responded on May 30 to a report of a residential burglary in the 1100 block of North Gray. Reported missing were a TV, DVD player and mini-stereo system.

• A man told police on May 29 that someone fraudulently withdrew a total of $1,840 from his account. He said the suspect(s) withdrew $60 each were made from an ATM at a local bank and made two $200 withdrawals from an ATM in Texas.

• A man reported on May 29 the theft of a revolver from his vehicle. He noted that the gun was loaded with long-rifle bullets.

County Arrests

• On May 30, Jerry Vandever, 51, of Richardson, Texas, and Hope Adams, were arrested on charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. In addition, Vandever was charged with driving without a CDL (commercial driver’s license), while Adams was also charged with possession of marijuana.

• On May 27, Billy R. Alton, 40, of El Dorado, was arrested on a petition to revoke probation warrant.

• On May 30, Gary A. Ward, 57, of El Dorado, was arrested on a warrant for criminal contempt.

County Reports

• On May 27, a woman reported her vehicle, a Jeep Grand Cherokee, stolen. Officers recovered the vehicle later in the day, filled with water and missing its battery. The vehicle was not near a body of water and damage was visible on the front bumper.

• On May 28, a woman incarcerated at the Union County Detention Center made a statement to police about narcotics she had hidden before her arrest. She told police exactly where to find the drugs, which were stashed in a trash can outside of her church. Officers recovered meth and syringes at the site.

• On May 29, a woman called the Sheriff’s Office (UCSO) in reference to a trailer ramp in the middle of Industrial Road. When an officer arrived, the woman had put the trailer ramp in the yard of her shop, also on Industrial. The officer was able to track down the owner of the ramp and Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office employees told him that the owner had been notified.

• On May 29, an officer responded to a call to the UCSO lobby regarding theft of property. A woman said that she noticed several transactions on a bank statement that she did not recognize. However, she had not lost track of her debit card at any time. When she returned home after filing the report, her husband realized that his debit card and their son’s phone were missing from the drawer they were being kept in. The parents did not believe their son was responsible for the theft.

• On May 30, a man reported an assault that took place at Windwood Grocery Store. The complainant said that he ran into his nephew sitting in his car at the store and approached to greet him. The nephew acted strangely and threatened his uncle. At that point, the complainant walked to his truck to leave, but the nephew followed carrying a golf club. As the complainant tried to roll up his window, the nephew struck at him. The man was able to leave without injury.
