Two defendants appeared this week in 35th Judicial District Court on felony battery charges in connection to two separate, domestic incidents in which the victims sustained serious nose injuries, including one in which the victim’s nose was split, allegedly with a meat cleaver, according to El Dorado police reports.

Bond was set at $100,000 Friday for Darin T. Brown, 33, of Junction City.

Brown was arrested Thursday for second-degree domestic battery, assault on a family or household member and possession of a firearm by certain persons.

Officers were called Thursday to a residence in the 600 block of Champagnolle in reference to a domestic disturbance involving a male with a gun.

A woman told police that Brown, the father of her 2-year-old son, had assaulted her and their child.

After giving the toddler a bath, the woman said she asked Brown to help dress him. She said Brown refused and insisted that the child dress himself.

When the boy began pushing Brown toward the door, saying, “Daddy leave,” the woman said Brown violently shoved him in the chest, causing him to fall.

The woman said she ran to check on the boy, and an argument ensued, during which she led Brown to the door in an effort to get him to leave.

As they approached the door, Brown turned around and struck her several times in the face with his fist, the victim said.

The woman told officers that she is not sure if she blacked out during the incident, but after Brown struck her, she next remembered lying on the kitchen floor and then crawling toward the child, who appeared to be frightened.

She said Brown had a pistol in his pocket when he arrived at the residence. She said he did not point the gun at her, but she heard the gun “being cycled” after she was knocked to the floor.

Police said the woman’s nose and lips were bleeding profusely and severely swollen. She was treated at Medical Center of South Arkansas for a fractured nasal bone and severe facial swelling, according to a police report.

A short time later, Union County sheriff’s deputies took Brown into custody at his job site in the 6400 block of Calion Highway. Police said they did not recover any firearms during the arrest.

During his first appearance hearing Friday, Brown was determined to be indigent and assigned to a public defender.

If he is released on bond, Brown is to abide by a daily curfew of 5 p.m. until 7 a.m., with an exemption for work, and will be required to wear a GPS monitor. Brown was also ordered not have any contact with the victims in the case.

Shannon D. McDaniel, 28, of 1600 Short E. Hillsboro, B1E, was issued a $10,000 signature bond during a first appearance hearing on July 11 on a charge second-degree battery.

McDaniel is accused of attacking her 26-year-old boyfriend with a meat cleaver during an incident that was reported July 9.

Police responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at McDaniel’s residence, and they said there was a large amount of blood on the floor and walls in the foyer.

Officers said an area of McDaniel’s cheek was red and she had a few small scratches on her arms, noting that the injuries were not consistent with the amount of blood that was found on the scene.

She told police she did not know where the blood came from. She said her boyfriend struck her in the face during an argument and the two began

“scratching each other.”

Police said they spoke with the victim’s relatives and learned he had been transported by private vehicle to MCSA, where he underwent emergency surgery.

He told police that he and McDaniel began arguing in the bedroom and the argument spilled down the hallway into the living room. He said McDaniel went to the kitchen and returned with three knives and a meat cleaver.

McDaniel swung the meat cleaver and struck him in the nose, causing a severe laceration that split is nose in two.

He admitted back-handing McDaniel in the face after she struck him with the meat cleaver. The victim said he panicked when he saw blood spraying from his nose and ran to a neighbor’s residence for help.
