Drillers fall in opener at state tournament

CONWAY - After being held in check early on, Jacksonville's offense sprang to life en route to a 13-1 win over the El Dorado Drillers in the opening round of the Arkansas American Legion Junior State Tournament Friday at Hendrix College's Warrior Field.

The Drillers (9-14-1), the No. 2 seed from Zone 4, will take on Russellville at 4 p.m. today in an elimination game.

The game was scoreless until the third when Jacksonville, the Zone 2 champions, scored three runs to take a 3-0 lead.

Jacksonville then broke the game open with four in the fourth before scoring three runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

The Drillers scored their lone run in the fourth with Cody Lee picking up an RBI.

Baylor Brumley took the loss on the mound, allowing eight runs with only three being earned in four innings of work. He allowed four hits, walked one and struck out four.

Tyler Johnson allowed two hits and two runs with one being earned in one inning in relief. He walked one and didn't record any strikeouts.

Westdan Owens allowed three runs with two being earned in one inning. He allowed one hit, walked two and did not have any strikeouts.

Offensively, the Drillers were held to five hits.

Landen Rainwater was 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, while Charles Hoof went 1-for-1 with two walks and two stolen bases.

Tyler Martin was 1-for-2 with a stolen base and a run scored, while Jacob Eubanks was 1-for-2 with a stolen base and Chase Webb finished 1-for-3.
