The El Dorado-Union County Chamber of Commerce’s annual New Educators Breakfast will be held at 7:30 a.m. Aug. 10 at the El Dorado Conference Center.

According to a press release, the event helps welcome new teachers to the community and recognizes some of the current teachers for their hard work.

The keynote speaker of the event will be Officer Tommy Norman, of the Little Rock Police Department and MISSION GIVE Foundation, Inc.

Norman graduated from Ole Main High School in 1990 and between 1991 and 1998, he worked many jobs in the nursing and mental health field. He worked as a certified nursing assistant at Riley’s Oak Hill Manor Nursing Home and was also a mental health worker at Pinnacle Point Hospital.

“Norman’s unorthodox approach to policing includes thousands of video posts, pictures and daily interactive engagement at the Boys & Girls Clubs and Police Athletic League with those that he protects and serves,” the press release stated. “He is credited for doing things like presenting 50 NLRSD students with backpacks and $50 gift cards from Shoe Carnival in August to purchase shoes, starting the ‘Shop with a Cop’ program to help financially struggling students or just dancing with children.”

Norman has gained national and international attention for his unconventional methods of law enforcement, which came from a televised CNN program on May 10, 2015.

He has also been featured on the Today Show, which highlighted some of his day-to-day actives that he does with children. He has also been referred to as the “Social Media Cop.”
