Hamburg downs Strong

HAMBURG - Jonathan Kelley went 5-of-6 passing for 106 yards and two touchdowns, as Hamburg spoiled Sirl Wright’s debut as Strong’s head coach with a 47-14 win over the Bulldogs Friday night.

Strong (0-1) turned the ball over three times and managed just 130 yards of total offense against the Lions (2-0).

Kelley opened the scoring with a 2-yard run that capped a 10-play, 52-yard scoring drive in just under four minutes.

Nicholas Bridge scored on a 68-yard run with 5:33 left in the opening stanza with Jesus Aguilar’s second extra point making it 14-0.

Later in the first half, Kelley threw touchdown passes of 42 and 16 yards to Jalen Wilson and Gage Price respectively to extend the lead to 28-0.

Hamburg would go on to score three touchdowns in just over 6 1/2 minutes to break the game open.

After Armodd Taylor scored on a 2-yard run with 3:18 to play in the period, X-Zavier McHenry got the Bulldogs on the scoreboard by returning the ensuing kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown with Tyler Gafford’s catch making the two-point conversion successful.

Strong trailed 47-8 at intermission, and the Bulldogs would score the lone points in the second half.

With 4:20 to play in the game, Emauri Newton threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Derrion Davis to cap an 11-play, 76-yard drive that ended the scoring.

LeAndrew Greer led the Bulldogs with 40 yards rushing on 14 carries, while Jamyron Thompson hauled in two passes for 28 yards to lead the receivers.

Newton went 4-of-6 passing for 64 yards with a touchdown for Strong.

The Bulldogs will take on Lake Village in their home opener next Friday.
