An unattended toddler found near a road in Ouachita County led authorities to a car accident off Highway 24 that left the child’s mother dead.

According to the Ouachita County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were called Highway 24, near Harvey’s Grocery, at 7:50 a.m. Monday for a report of an unattended toddler near the road. The 3-year-old boy was taken into custody and found to have scratches and cuts throughout his body, but was otherwise in good health. He was turned over to the custody of the Department of Human Services. Authorities were able to find the identity of the child’s mother and discovered from family members that they had not seen her or her two children in a few days.

After returning to the scene where the child was found, deputies located an accident off the highway in a deep ravine that was not visible from the road. A vehicle was laying on its side and a woman was found dead. Deputies noted that it appeared as if the woman had been ejected from the vehicle. Officials told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that the car had been in the ravine for about two days.

A 1-year-old child was found in a car seat in the vehicle, awake and alert, and deputies were able to remove the child from the vehicle. The child was then sent to Ouachita County Medical Center for treatment.

According to the Camden News, the mother has been identified as Lisa Nicole Holliman, 25, of Camden.

Arkansas State Police are investigating the accident.
