Stone of remembrance to be placed at local church

In remembrance of those buried at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church’s cemetery who do not have markers on their graves, the church will place a plaque at the cemetery’s entrance Sunday.

Pastor of the church, Larry Richmond, and Associate Pastor Lee Coggins, along with members of church will lay the stone of remembrance at 12:45 p.m. Sunday in the church’s cemetery.

Richmond said the plaque was donated from church funds from the members of the church. The plaque was made at the Ed Langston Monument Company in El Dorado.

The plaque states, “In loving memory of those lying in these hallowed grounds whose resting places are known but to God. Dedicated by the members of Ebenezer Baptist Church August 1, 2018.”

Richmond said he hopes to start a movement, motivating people in the community to take care and keep up other local cemeteries.

“I’m asking that we as children of God will take time and attend to the final resting place of these, our sisters and brothers,” he said.

Richmond said the church was started in 1861 and many of his family members are buried in the cemetery.

“God had put it in my heart to remember where I came from, to remember my heritage,” he said, referring to why he had the idea for the plaque.

Sunday is also the church’s homecoming and revival.

“This is the day, this is the season for us to come back,” he said. “That’s the theme of this homecoming revival. I just want to do my part.”

Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church is located at 269 S. Caledonia Road.
