Junction City wins state weightlifting meet

ALMA - Junction City won its second straight 3A State Powerlifting Championship on Saturday in Alma. The Dragons compiled a total weight of 4,910 pounds.

Fred Daniel was the overall state champion in the 148-pound class with a total weight of 540 pounds. Daniel set a state record with a 315-pound bench press.

Other Dragon lifters included Kevontae Haynes (181) with 530, Cody Adkins (heavyweight) 610, Tyler LeBlanc (259) 590, Terrell Gibson (242) 590, Frazier (220) 520, Trey Miner (198) 510, Jakiron Cook (165) 430, Javen Cook (132) 270 and Ethan Holmes (123) 320.

Parkers Chapel's Ethan Cousins was the overall champion in the 165-pound weight division. He had a total weight of 555 with a 320 bench press and a power clean of 235. He became the school's first-ever powerlifting champion.

"He was our first medalist last year. He got third at 181 pounds. We dropped him a weight class this year and he was the overall champ by 25 pounds so he won it going away," said Parkers Chapel coach Hunter Vincent. "I thought if he performed like could he would bring home the gold. He did just that."

El Dorado's Clasine Miller was third in the 181-pound class with a total weight of 580. He tied a state record with a 305-pound power clean.

Bentonville won the 6A/7A crown and was the overall champion with 5,090 pounds. Greene County Tech (4,650) won the 5A with Booneville (5,140) winning the 4A title. Danville and Hampton tied for the 2A crown with 4,470 pounds.

A total of 420 lifters competed.
