Benefit concert for Calen Summerville set for Friday

Event will be held at Hill’s Pool Hall

Two local bands are playing a benefit concert Friday to help the family of Calen Summerville, who died in a car accident Aug. 31.

The event, which will be held at Hill’s Pool Hall from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday, is billed as the “Playin’ for Calen” concert in Summerville’s memory. Two local bands, Age of Man and the Soulpranos, who both have personal connections to Summerville, will play to raise money for Summerville’s family.

Summerville, 21, of El Dorado, died in a car accident on his way to work on Aug. 31. According to a statement from Jon Bourn, a member of the Soulpranos, Summerville “left behind many friends, family, his wife, who is pregnant with their first child.” The statement, which was delivered to the News-Times, went on to say the child is due this month and that Summerville also had a stepdaughter, who he felt was his own.

There will be a $5 cover charge for the event and all attendees must be 21 years of age or older. The event listing on Facebook said further donations are welcome as “all proceeds will be donated to financially help his family through this terrible tragedy.”

Brandon Borden, a member of Age of Man, is responsible for putting the event together.

“The family of Calen feels incredibly happy and thankful to have so many people willing to participate and help during this terrible aftermath,” the statement from Bourn said. “It has been a devastating blow to so many, mostly his loving wife, Jessie.”

“Calen was a terrific person in all aspects of his life. The world is a more lonely and colder place now that he is no longer with us. Maybe this will remind us all that truly matters in our lives are the people in it.”
