Dragon Stadium renamed ‘David Carpenter Stadium’

JUNCTION CITY — The Junction City School Board approved the administration’s recommendation to rename Dragon Stadium as “David Carpenter Stadium” at its meeting Tuesday.

According to a previous News-Times report, Carpenter officially hung up his helmet and formally retired from the head football coach position in December. He still acts as the district’s athletic director and coaches track and weightlifting.

Due to safety concerns, Lowe said that the district is looking to construct a physical education building.

Board members approved scheduling a financial workshop with Ray Beardsley of First Security Public Finance after the board’s meeting in July, which was rescheduled to 6 p.m. on July 6. During the workshop, Beardsley will detail a new partnership funding option during the workshop, Lowe said.

The Junction City School Board approved the administration’s request to purchase a new 77-passenger International school bus from Summit Bus Sales for the base price of $75,875 plus upgrades not to exceed $10,000.

Junction City High School Principal Joy Mason said that teachers are making wish lists for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) academic materials and working on STEAM connections.

They also approved resignations of 7-12 music teacher Allen Simmons, junior high social studies teacher Jordan Hammett and high school physicial science teacher Whitney Major. Amanda Thurkill was approved to replace Hammett and rehire all classified staff for the upcoming school year.

The board approved a recommendation for the Northeast Claiborne Charter Board to hire Katie Nugent, who would replace Simmons. It also ok'd a recommendation for the NECC Board to hire Angela Margis as a reading recovery paraprofessional using Title I Louisiana funding.

The Junction City School Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 13 in the Junction City Special Programs Building.
