— St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in El Dorado will have a service of Scripture and prayer using music by the Taizé community in France at 5:30 p.m. this Sunday, April 2.

The Taizé community is located in the Burgundy region of France, and was founded in 1940 by Brother Roger Schüz, a Protestant of the Reformed (Presbyterian) tradition. Essentially a monastery, the community today includes over one hundred brothers from thirty countries around the world. It is a popular destination for youth pilgrimages, with over 100,000 young people visiting each year for prayer, Scripture study, and work.”

The music of Taizé makes use of sentences from the Bible, repeated many times to the same simple tune, creating a meditative experience, Chapman said. At the heart of the experience are the periods of silence following each chorus. The church will be lit with over 900 candles, lovingly placed by members and friends of the St. Mary’s chapter of the Daughters of the King, a religious order for women in the Episcopal Church.

This Taizé service one of many ways which enable us to “worship God in the beauty of holiness.” It is truly ecumenical, and persons of all denominations, faith traditions, or no faith at all, are invited to experience this time with us.

The church is located at 512 Champagnolle Rd.
