Drunken couple arrested in drug possession case

A Smackover man faces several felony drug charges in connection to an investigation that began when he and his wife were arrested for public intoxication.

Zachary B. Cherry, 32, of 601 Lisbon Road, is being held in the Union County Jail on a $100,000 bond for possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver, possession of Schedule I or II narcotics with intent to deliver, possession of Schedule IV narcotics, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of instruments of crime.

Sgt. Robert Hodges of the Smackover Police Department said that at 10:30 a.m. Sunday he received a report about “a couple of subjects who appeared to be under the influence of something” in the 600 block of Broadway.

Hodges said Cherry and his wife, 29-year-old Courtney L. Cherry, were standing near a soda vending machine in front of a business in the area.

When he arrived on the scene, Hodges said he made contact with Blake Cherry and subsequently took him into custody for public intoxication, possession of instruments of crime and possession of a controlled substance.

Blake Cherry had in his possession Xanax and Valium pills, Hodges said.

A follow-up investigation led to the discovery of more drugs and drug paraphernalia — including marijuana, methamphetamine, Ecstasy, digital scales, hypodermic needles and spoons — and additional charges for Blake Cherry.

Hodges declined to provide additional details about the arrest, saying, “We’re still investigating, and there are more arrests to come.”

Courtney Cherry was arrested for public intoxication, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Hodges said Courtney yelled and used profane language when he made contact with her, and she pulled away from him as he attempted to take her into custody.
