Veterans honored during ‘Waiting to Excel’ Summer Camp

EL DORADO — “Two years, six months and 12 days” is how long Robert White of El Dorado served in the military and in Vietnam beginning in 1968 as a Specialist 4. Veterans were welcomed to a luncheon on Monday by the Rev. Barry Dobson, pastor of St. John Missionary Baptist Church.

White was one of several veterans who were honored and treated to lunch by the church and Fairview Community Development Association, during the “Waiting to Excel” summer camp for children.

Corporal Thomas Kelly served in Korea in the Army for three years – 1950 to 1953 and Jimmy Franklin served in the Army, ranked as a Specialist First Class from 1969 to 1982 at Fort Hood, Texas.

Olice Green served in Vietnam as a Specialist-5 in the Army from 1966 to 1969 and Eugene White served in the Army in Europe and the United States from 1966-2001 as an E-7 SFC.

Roy Bullock served in the Army and Air Force from 1963 to 1989, in Vietnam, Korea, West Germany and the Republic of China, ranked E-8. Naaman Lockhart served in the Air Force from 1969 through 1972 – the first two years in Vietnam and then in England, ranked E-5.

James Morris served in the Army from 1967 through 1969 in Vietnam as an E5 and was awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Stars. Charley Turner served as an E-3 in the Air Force from 1965-69 in Japan and England and Randy Miller served as a specialist in the Army from 1971-75 in Germany and again from 1989-95 stateside and in Germany.

George Holly served in the Army National Guard from September 1980 until 2008 as a Staff Sergeant E-6, in Honduras, Guatemala and Germany and in the United States after Hurricanes Katrina and Andrew. Vernon Williams served in the Air Force from 1981-85 and was ranked E-3.

Charles Moody and Eddie Malone both served from 1991-1994 in the U.S. Navy and Albert Green served in the Army in 1970-71. John Hayes served in the U.S. Army from 1961-1967 in Vietnam and Germany and Clark Muldrew served in the U.S. Army from 1978-82 in Korea.
