Symphony to present tribute to Louis Armstrong Saturday

EL DORADO — The South Arkansas Symphony Orchestra will present a tribute to Louis Armstrong with world renown trumpeter and vocalist Byron Stripling at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at the El Dorado Municipal Auditorium.

Since his Carnegie Hall debut with Skitch Henderson and the New York Pops, Stripling has become a pops orchestra favorite, according to a news release from Kermit Poling, conductor and music director of the South Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. Stripling has soloed with Boston Pops, National Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, Cincinnati Pops, Seattle Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, Dallas Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, Vancouver Symphony and the Toronto Symphony.

“No question about it, Byron is the finest jazz trumpeter in the world. Add to that his smooth vocals and his striking sense of humor and this is a concert not to be missed. It’s always a pleasure to work with him,” Poling said.

Stripling was lead trumpeter and soloist with the Count Basie Orchestra and has played and recorded with the bands of Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, Dave Brubeck, Lionel Hampton, Clark Terry, Louis Bellson and Buck Clayton, in addition to the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band and the GRP All Star Big Band.

Adult general admission tickets are $40, with reserved seating closer to the stage at $55. Discounted tickets for seniors, students and military run from $5 to $30. Both open seating and reserved seats are available by calling the SASO office at 870-862-0521. Tickets are also available online from www.southarkansassymphony.org.
