To the editor:

Words matter!

Yes, words do matter. Some words can be rather “depressing.” On the other hand, there are many words most people would say are “inspiring.” There are two words that have been circulating around the halls of Congress this year that have contributed to progress almost grinding to a halt. Those two words are “repeal and replace.” When those two words have been applied to health care, the result is absolutely no progress. Now that’s “depressing.”

If we could just find two new words to be used as an objective statement for health care, maybe the stalemate in Congress could be resolved. I suggest that “repair and improve” might be a new objective statement that would help. It might even get Republicans and Democrats talking to each other again about health care. We might actually be able to craft a new health care law that, even though it didn’t make health care for Americans “great,” it might make it better. And I’d bet most Americans would say that would be “inspirational.”
