JON M. PHILLIPS

Jon Martin Phillips, 66, of Louann, passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2017, in Shreve-port, Louis-iana, after a short illness. He was born April 17, 1951, to the late Grady Pierce and Jewel Mae Porter Phillips in Smackover.

He was a member of Joyce City Baptist Church. Martin graduated in 1969 from Smackover High School, where he was a star football player, and also played football for Southern State University. He attended the Bossier Police Academy, was a park ranger, and retired from the Louisiana Department of Transportation. Martin was deeply loved by his entire family. Uncle Martin found great pride and joy spending time with his nieces and nephews. Martin was a charter member of Phillips Deer Club. He loved the outdoors and writing quirky messages and riddles to friends and family.

Survivors include his three brothers, Herbert Phillips (Mary) of McNeil, James Phillips of El Dorado, Roy Phillips (Glenda) of Minden, Louisiana; three sisters, Hilda Teer of Minden, Ann Pearson (O.L.), and Mary Nelson (Bob), both of Homer, Louisiana; nine nephews; six nieces; and 65 great-nieces and great-nephews.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Young’s.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 22, at Young’s Chapel with the Rev. Leon Dixon and the Rev. Carly Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Smackover Cemetery under the direction of Young’s Funeral Directors.
