Junction City School Board awards roofing bid

JUNCTION CITY — The Junction City School Board accepted a bid of $63,500 for a new roof on the kindergarten/first grade building on June 14.

The board awarded the roofing contract to Cross Roofing, who submitted the low bid of $65,300 to replace the roof on the kindergarten/ first grade building, according to minutes from the June 14 meeting.

The new roof will change the design of the roof from a valley with drains to a more conventional slight pitch that will allow water to flow to the roof edges.

The board met in regular session in the newly constructed Special Programs Building.

The building houses the special programs office, special education offices, speech therapy, occupational therapy, alternative learning, nurse’s station, and a spacious meeting room.

The board also accepted the bid of ASBA Risk Management for the coverage of the district’s property, vehicle fleet, and equipment for a total of $45,827.

The board approved ASBA policy updates and tabled an agenda item to approve building level student handbooks until the July meeting.

The board also approved all salary schedules for licensed and classified staff.

The new salary schedules reflect a $1,000 raise for all certified employees and a $300 raise for all classified employees.

Two resignations were accepted by the School Board during the June meeting. Katie Piercy resigned from her position as an elementary teacher and Kari Belding resigned as music teacher and band director. Both teachers gave personal reasons as the motivation for their departures.

The board approved the hiring of two staff members. Emily Tripple was hired as elementary physical education teacher and literacy interventionist. Dana Alexander was hired as a kindergarten teacher.

The board, principals, and superintendent also discussed ongoing maintenance projects that include renovations to high school restrooms, painting, paving of student areas around the high school, improvements to elementary playgrounds, work on athletic facilities, and improvements to the general school plant.

Superintendent Robby Lowe reported that the Special Programs Building is complete except for some items on the architect’s punch list.

He also reported that the gymnasium is progressing well and contractors are holding firm to the September 2 completion date.

Elementary Principal Teresa Matochik and High School Principal Joy Mason briefed the board on initiatives and trainings their staff is undergoing over the summer.

Matochick also recognized the Top Dragons for the month of May. Students recognized inlcuded Demarlo Elliott, kindergarten; Kassidy Thompson, first grade; Sam Yeager, second grade; Cole Hanry, third grade; Brandon New, fourth grade; Bryan Estrada, fifth grade; and Mallory Sharp, sixth grade.
