Great Dane attacks seven-year-old boy in Strong

STRONG — A seven-year-old boy was bitten by a Great Dane while playing outside Thursday afternoon in Strong, according to the child’s mother.

Megan Russell of Huttig stated that her son was under the care of his babysitter when the attack occurred. According to Russell, the boy was next door playing with neighborhood friends and decided to jump on the trampoline. While attempting to climb on the trampoline, the dog allegedly ran through an underground fence and bit his leg causing lacerations.

An incident report obtained from the Union County Sheriff’s Office stated that the boy was transported to a local hospital and treated for lacerations on his left calf. Animal Control Officer Charles Hartsell was able to make contact with the owner of the dog at his residence on Pigeon Hill Road and advised him that the dog must be kept on a leash with someone in control of it while outside. Despite receiving these orders, Russell stated that the dog was seen outside in the yard unsupervised on Friday.

Russell stated that her son received 17 staples in his leg as a result of the attack.
