PINE BLUFF - Warren upended Smackover 59-30 Monday night in the Hootens Kickoff Classic, played at UA-Pine Bluff. The Buckaroos played the second half without senior Jordan Jones, who was injured late in the first half.

On their first play from scrimmage, the Lumberjacks dipped into their bag of tricks to claim the lead.

A well-executed halfback pass from Franklin Gilmore to Peyton Hargis resulted in a 58-yard touchdown.

Sergio Yepes made the extra point giving Warren a 7-0 lead with 11:50 left in the opening quarter.

A turnover led to Warren increasing its advantage.

On a third-and-long from its own 15, Smackover quarterback Beau Burson attempted to scramble when the ball was knocked from his grasp by a Lumberjack linebacker. Immediately, Warren recovered the ball at the 19. The Lumberjacks would surge down to the Smackover 10, but could get no closer.

Bo Hembree’s team moved further ahead when Yepes made a 26-yard field goal with 4:09 on the clock.

The Lumberjacks were on the verge of placing Smackover in a substantial hole until Jordan Jones quickly turned the tide of the game.

Hargis zipped a pass in the middle of Smackover’s defense. The pass was off target and Jones easily hauled it in from his free safety position. The senior then followed a series of blocks and cut back into the middle of the field where he ran untouched for a touchdown.

A complete recap of the game will be in Wednesday's edition of the El Dorado News-Times.
