Thomas to run for District 7 seat

Floyd M. Thomas, Jr., of El Dorado announced his candidacy Monday for the District 7 seat in the Arkansas General Assembly.

District 7 covers parts of Union, Calhoun and Ouachita Counties. The incumbent, John Baine, is not seeking re-election.

Thomas said he has the skills, the desire and the time to serve the citizens of south Arkansas, his home for over 50 years.

“I’ve been serving the people and the community since I first started practicing law in El Dorado in 1974,” said Thomas. “I believe I can serve constituents at the State Capitol like I’ve served clients in courts and legal proceedings, by listening to them and working to negotiate for their interests and the things they feel strongly about.

“I’ve been blessed with a long and rewarding career, and now I realize I still have the desire to serve the people who I have worked alongside over the years. I hope the voters of south Arkansas will honor me with that opportunity.”

Thomas graduated from El Dorado High School in 1967. He then attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville where he graduated in 1971 with a bachelor of science in Public Administration degree. Thomas received his law degree from Southern Methodist University School of Law in 1974. He was president of the Union County Bar Association in 1980 and served as chair of the Arkansas Bar Association Ethics Committee. Thomas is also a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, which is limited to no more than 1 percent of the lawyers who are licensed to practice in the State.

Thomas is married to the former Rina Juarez and has four children and three grandchildren.

He is a member of First United Methodist Church of El Dorado, where he has served on various boards and committees and taught Sunday school. He is a past president of United Cerebral Palsy of South Arkansas and the Independent Living Center. He has served on the Board of the Desoto Council of the Boy Scouts and as legal counsel to the El Dorado Chamber of Commerce. He is currently a board member of the El Dorado Development Corp.
