Garrett nominated for prestigious award

Harding University’s defensive lineman and El Dorado native, De’Onte Garrett, was announced as a nominee for the 2015 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, the most prestigious off-the-field honor in college football.

Garrett, a 6-1, 305-pound junior, played on three state championship teams at El Dorado as an offensive lineman. He moved to defense with the Bisons. Last season, he played in 11 games, recording 10 tackles with a sack and a fumble recovery.

He also competed in track, throwing the shot in both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Garrett, a Bible & Family Ministry major, was named Lone Star Conference Field Athlete of the Week.

Through the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, Allstate and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) recognize a select group of college football players who have made a commitment to helping others and making a positive impact on their communities.

From this year’s record number of 197 nominees, a final roster of 22 award recipients - comprised of 11 players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and 11 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III and the NAIA - will be unveiled in September.
