Stuff The Bus event to be held July 18

A Stuff The Bus event – where local residents are asked to load up a school bus with new backpacks – will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 18, simultaneously at Walmart and the Boys and Girls Club on North West Avenue in El Dorado. In addition to backpacks, monetary donations will also be accepted. The United Way of Union County will use the funds to purchase additional backpacks.

The Stuff The Bus drive is an effort to collect backpacks for distribution at the third annual Back 2 School Blast set to be held on Aug. 1 at the Boys and Girls Club. The free backpacks will be handed out at the event, which will also include a resource fair, games and food.

Several local businesses are currently acting as collection points for backpacks until July 17. Those are: BancorpSouth Main Street location, SouthernBancorp on Timberlane, Murphy Oil and all El Dorado locations of First Financial Bank.

All backpacks will be collected on July 31 and delivered to the Back 2 School Blast on Aug. 1, according to Alexis Alexander, executive director of the United Way of Union County. For more information, call 862-4903.

Antique Dealers show at Conference Center

Union County Antique Dealers will bring their annual antique show and sale to the El Dorado Conference Center from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. on July 10 and from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on July 11. Admission will be $5 per person at the door, good for both days. The events is being co-sponsored by Smackover State Bank.

Dealers from four states will be selling a wide variety of antiques and vintage collectibles including furniture, Fostoria, Fenton and Duncan Miller glassware, Camark and Roseville pottery, as well as a wide variety of estate jewelry, according to a news release from the Union County Antique Dealers.

A pottery expert is expected to attend the show and sale to offer appraisals of Camark and Niloak pottery.

Commissioners to meet Monday

The Union County Election Commissioners will meet at noon on Monday in the fourth floor conference room of the Union County Courthouse. Members of the board will meet with the county clerk to certify write-in candidates who have filed eligibility affidavits, notice of write-in candidates and the political practices pledge for the annual state-wide school elections, scheduled to be held Sept. 15. Tuesday is the last day to file as a candidate in the 2015 school elections and filing can be conducted at the Union County Clerk’s Office on the first floor of the Union County Courthouse.

The commission will also meet at noon on July 10 in the fourth floor conference room at the Union County Courthouse to determine by lot the order in which a candidate’s name will appear on the ballot. Both meetings are open to the public.

Governor appoints three to board

LITTLE ROCK – Governor Asa Hutchinson has appointed Charisse Dean, Brett Williamson and Susan Chambers to serve on the Arkansas Board of Education.
