Math competition set for Saturday

The Martha Elliott Deichler Union County Mathematics contest, open to all Union County mathematics students enrolled in seventh grade math, eighth grade math, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, PreCal/Trig, Calculus AB, Calculus BC and Statistics, will be held beginning with registration at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at the El Dorado High School Auditorium. Tests will begin at 10 a.m. and the awards ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m. Trophies and prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place in each category.

AGFC to conduct prescribed fire workshop

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will be conducting several free landowner workshops on the practice and use of prescribed fire for habitat management and one of the classes in Southern Arkansas will be held from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Feb. 18 at the De Soto Boy Scout Camp in Junction City, according to a news release from Jeffrey Taverner, certified wildlife biologist with the Southwest Region of the AGFC.

The De Soto Boy Scout Camp is located at 319 De Soto Camp Road, and is located off U.S. 167 approximately six miles south of El Dorado. Directions to the camp from U.S. 167 are to turn left onto Wingfield Lake Road, travel approximately 1.5 miles and turn right onto Camp De Soto Road.

The class will discuss the history, usage and techniques involved in managing habitat via the use of prescribed fire. Topics discussed will include history, tools, techniques, weather factors and Arkansas fire laws.

Taverner said that if the weather permits, “there will be a burn demonstration after each class. Please dress for outdoor activities on the day of the workshop. There will be a lunch provided at this course. Please register by seven days prior to the class to ensure your meal will be reserved. Union County Spelling Bee to take place on Friday

The Union County Spelling Bee will be held at 9 a.m. on Friday at the TAC House in El Dorado, according to Jeannie Strother, Union County Spelling Bee coordinator.

American Red Cross volunteers to meet Friday

Local volunteers with the American Red Cross will meet at 1 p.m. on Friday at the Red Cross Office, 501 Timberlane.

Volunteers will be discussing future training, on call schedules and plan activities for Red Cross month, which is March.

The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization led by volunteers, that provides relief to victims of disaster and helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies, according to Janelle Williams.
