More than 100 students from five schools in the county took part in the third annual Martha Deichler Union County Math Contest, held Jan. 31 at El Dorado High School, according to Tom Simmons, math chair for the El Dorado School District.
This year, the contest increased in numbers of students, schools participating and categories. Students from EHS, Barton Junior High School, Smackover High School, Norphlet High School and Strong-Huttig High School competed for first, second and third place trophies. Trophy winners also received awards of $25, $15 and $10.
Competition was held in nine divisions – seventh grade math, eighth grade math, Algebra I and II, Geometry, Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry, Statistics, Calculus AB and Calculus BC.
Four students have won trophies in each of the three math contests to date: Brycelynn Bailey of Smackover and Grace Chou, Claire Lavoie and Jonah Haney of EHS.
Sponsor Bill Deichler, who named the competition in honor of his mother, a math teacher, was on hand to encourage the students and as a speaker.
Participating teachers included: Debra Spooner of Junction City High School; Jigish Patel of Strong-Huttig; Shelley Childers, Amber Miller and Crystal Yeager of Smackover; and Karen Greer, Matt Lawrence and John Davis of EHS.
This year’s student winners included:
• Seventh grade math: First place – Aidan Price, Barton; second place – Zander Jones, Barton; and third place – Ryan Coan, Barton.
• Eighth grade math: First place – Nastajae Alderson, Strong-Huttig; second place – Margarita Gonzales, Barton; and third place – Marianna Wayne, Strong-Huttig.
• Algebra I: First place – Alexis Downum, EHS; second place – Robert Dixon, Smackover; and third place – Emily Coulter, Smackover.
• Geometry: First place – Sophia Meyer, EHS; second place – Camila Schrader, EHS; and third place – Lydia Conley, EHS.
• Algebra II: First place – Nathan Oliver, EHS; second place – Faith Chou, EHS; and third place – Hunter Lee, Smackover.
• Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry: First place – Brycelynn Bailey, Smackover; second place – Grace Chou, EHS; and third place – Marshall Coan, EHS.
• Statistics: First place – Krisanna Reynolds, Smackover; second place – Reagan Pyron, Smackover; and third place – Makara Frazier, Smackover.
• Calculus AB: First place – Jo Zhou, EHS; second place – Katherine Conley, EHS; and Claire Lavoie, EHS.
• Calculus BC: First place – Christopher Watkins, EHS; Jonah Haney, EHS; and Emily Herrin, EHS.
