The location for the 2015 American Cancer Society’s Union County Relay for Life has been changed to the South Arkansas Community College gymnasium, 300 S. West Ave., El Dorado, due to the weather, according to Tamie Erwin, chair of this year’s Relay. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. today and will end at 1:30 a.m. on Saturday. The event was originally scheduled to be held at the John E. Gross Recreation Complex in Parkers Chapel.

The event will include a number of activities, events, contests, food and games, sponsored by 16 teams and members of the Relay for Life Committee. Other events scheduled include a cake walk, box car derby, food and hat contests, Jedi training and the luminary ceremony, set to begin at 9 p.m. today. Volunteers are needed to participate in Keep El Dorado Beautiful’s spring community cleanup scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Old City Park on College Avenue.

Civic and service organizations, church and youth groups, school groups and clubs, scouts, individuals, families, neighborhoods and businesses can organize cleanup teams and pitch in. Teams or a team representative will meet at Old City Park on College Avenue between 8 and 8:30 a.m. on Saturday to pick up supplies – trash bags, gloves and safety vests. Teams will be invited back to the park after they have cleaned their designated areas.

Keep El Dorado Beautiful will serve hot dogs and drinks, present team awards and give away several door prizes at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at the park. To register a team, call 870-866-8982.

The 12th annual Jimmy Reed Jr. Scholarship banquet, sponsored by the Pride and Progress Club of El Dorado, will be held at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Elks Lodge, corner of 19th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Honorees for this year’s banquet are Joseph and Sabrina King of El Dorado. Reed was a long-time community leader in El Dorado.

Tickets are $20 each and can be purchased by contacting any Pride and Progress member or club president, Wm. Jerome Robinson, at 918-1512 or 881-8935. Tickets will not be sold at the door.

The You Be the Chemist State Challenge will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at the El Dorado High School auditorium, according to Carolyn Smith, science chair for the El Dorado School District. She said the winner of this challenge will move on to the National Challenge, which is in Philadelphia on June 22.
