Virginia Dare Fielder Greer Smith, 91, of Monroe, La., and formerly of El Dorado, and Garland, Texas, passed away on Sunday, Sept.† 22, 2013, at The Oaks Nursing Home.

Born on March 30, 1922, in the Hopewell Community of Union County, she was the daughter of Olin and Loamie Elizabeth Edwards Fielder. Virginia married William J “Red” Greer in 1940. They had two children, William James Greer Jr. and Carol Greer Shaver. While living in El Dorado, she and her family were members of Immanuel Baptist Church. After her husband’s death in 1967, she married Edward Bruce Smith. They moved to Garland, Texas, where she lived for a number of years until he passed away. They were active members of the Jupiter Road Baptist Church.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; her son; her brothers, Aubrey Fielder, Noel Fielder and Gascal Fielder; and her sisters, Fern Owens and Vesta Selman.

She is survived by her daughter, Carol Greer Shaver of Monroe; and a sister, Mary Herring of Orlando, Fla. Other surviving relatives include her granddaughters, Debbie Greer Ryan of Haynesville, La., Terri Elaine (Randy) McElroy of Sachse, Texas; her grandsons, William Paul (Angela) Greer of Junction City, and Tony (Shannon) Wood of El Dorado; seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at noon today at Arlington Memorial Park with the Rev. Paula Claire Hall officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time today at Young’s Funeral Directors.
