Restoration of Confederate monument nearing completion
For years, the Confederate monument on the Union County Courthouse square in downtown El Dorado has weathered the seasons, but they have taken their toll on the 102-year-old statue. In 2010, when El Dorado resident Julie Waschka discovered a postcard of the statue, she contacted Andy Reed, a local en...

Picture:
Andy Reed of El Dorado, above left, has spent months working to restore the Confederate monument on the southwest corner of the Union County Courthouse Square. Reed used a toothbrush and water to clean some of the intricate details on the monument. Above right, years of South Arkansas weather had caused quite a build-up of ‘carbon crust’ on the monument. Reed said it took two weeks to clean just the statue. After a thorough cleaning, intricate details such as veins in the soldier’s hands, an insignia on his belt buckle and facial features came to life.

Picture: Picture:
The Confederate monument in downtown El Dorado.
Picture:
This photo shows Main Street, El Dorado, on March 10, 1910, when the Confederate monument on the southwest corner of the courthouse lawn was dedicated by members of the Daughters of the Confederacy. The now familiar landmark, shown draped in Confederate bunting, was erected by the Henry G. Bunn chapter of the UDC. This photograph shows Main Street, looking east to a long-gone bandstand and a two-story building that was the Arcade Hotel and later McCrory’s Store (now Laredo Grill).
