Last Saturday night I ran the spotlight for “The Music of Leonard Bernstein” which was performed by the very talented SouthArk Choral Society. The event was held at the South Arkansas Arts Center and I didn’t see many empty seats.

Several soloists were featured, including Soprano Addie Bosanko, Tenor Father Chuck Chapman, Mezzo Soprano Maragaret Pierce, and Celebrant Shelton Harden.
Heidi Giller Meadows expertly played the flute in a haunting but beautiful duet with Celebrant Shelton Harden, who sang “Simple Song.” This piece came from Bernstein’s 1971 Mass.
The choir was directed by South Arkansas Community College Music Professor Victoria Harden.

Bernstein created a variety of compositions and I really didn’t realize how diverse his pieces were until I became associated with this performance. Go here to find out more on the great composer, who would have turned 90 this year.

I believe anyone who can sing (or maybe desires to sing) can join the choral society. For more information on this very talented group, phone the SouthArk music department at 864-7176.
After the performance, a very nice wine and cheese reception was hosted by the South Arkansas Community College Foundation.
