School board elections today

Between Smackover and Strong in the week leading up to today’s school board elections, 37 people cast ballots in an attempt to secure four seats up for grabs among eight people.

According to the Union County Clerk’s Office, where early voting was taking place, business picked up after the first two days when only 15 people cast ballots.

Residents from Smackover will have to choose from Jerry Wayne Hegwood and Scott Martin for Zone 4 and Vivian “Jamie” Blackwell and Chris Long for Zone 5. In Strong, the race is on for Cindy C. Smith and Charles T. Dawkins for Zone 3, and Fredrick Baker and Arthemus Henry for Zone 4.

Polls in Smackover and Strong are open from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church in Smackover, 500 W. Fifth, and at Strong First Baptist Church, 554 S. Concord.
