El Dorado’s USA Drug is one of fewer than half of all 144 USA Drug stores to survive a massive closure following Walgreen Company’s acquisition in July of Little Rock-based Stephen L. LaFrance Holdings Inc., for $438 million.
According to Arkansas Business News, 27 Arkansas stores, of 76 total, are slotted for closure following the mid-September sale completion date which included USA Drug affiliates Super D and May’s drugstores.
Store closures were based on the market size and proximity of the store to a Walgreen’s, USA Drug affiliate or another drugstore, James W. Graham told Arkansas Business News.
Little Rock and Hot Springs suffered the most closures where five and four stores, respectively, won’t survive the acquisition.
