Arkansas’ highway department has been gifted with nearly $7 million in federal earmarks that it will be required to spend before the end of the year, according to Arkansas News.
The “use it or lose it” program identified $473 million in unspent earmarks nationwide roads, bridges, railways and bus systems so long as the projects are “shovel ready.”
In Arkansas, the lion’s share of the money has been allocated to Highway 226 “Northeast Arkansas Connector” in Jonesboro. The remaining $.6 million has been approved in decreasing increments for a railroad overpass in Marion, a drainage project in Jonesboro and an extension to I-535.
