Burn ban in effect as of Monday

Taking into consideration the 78 acres consumed and nine hours crews spent fighting the fire at South Arkansas Regional Airport-Goodwin Field on Sunday, Union County Judge Mike Loftin issued a countywide burn ban, effective Monday.

The ban will be in effect until sufficient rainfall can help ameliorate severe drought conditions and lower than average rainfall locally, according to a proclamation issued early today.

Loftin said the Union County branch of the Arkansas Forestry Commission — which was one of four agencies to respond to Sunday’s fire — pushed for the burn ban after working from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Sunday against the airport fire.
