UCSO: Fatal shooting could have been self defense

Union County Sheriff’s Office investigators are looking into the possibility of self defense in the shooting death of 37-year-old Gabriel Island Wednesday night at the hands of his wife, Velisa Island.

Following a verbal altercation between the couple at approximately 10 p.m. Wednesday, UCSO deputies were dispatched to 706 Wildwood Drive where they discovered the body of Gabriel Island on the living room floor, the apparent victim of a gunshot wound to the head.

Gabriel Island was transported to the Medical Center of South Arkansas where he was pronounced dead in the emergency room by Union County Coroner Curtis Butterfield, according to UCSO Chief Investigator Clark Burton.

Velisa Island has since been charged with manslaughter but due to a history of domestic violence in the couple’s home, the prosecuting attorney has approved for her release on a citation while the investigation continues, Burton said.
