$4.7 billion budget approved, Williams elected speaker

Lawmakers approved a $4.7 billion state budget to take effect July 1 when both chambers closed the 2012 fiscal session at approximately noon today, according to Arkansas News.

Other business including the election of Rep. Darrin Williams (D-Little Rock) as speaker-designate for the 2013 regular session. Historians believe Williams will be the first black person to hold the spot.

Williams faced off against Terry Rice (R-Waldron) and won by a vote of 54-46, however, the next Legislature does not have to honor the election.
