Skate rink to host final bash

For those still considering their Friday night plans, consider stopping by the former Hot Wheels Skating Center, 1334 W. Hillsboro, which will be hosting a final bash from 7 to 10 p.m. tonight before it closes its doors for good.

Several News-Timers will be out there as well. We’ll be the ones failing to stay upright.

As I work in the neighborhood the “Crystal Palace” was located (I know I am dating myself here) it was obvious over the last few years, it had since fallen from the nostalgic place we attended as kids every Friday night in our pre teen and early teen years. Another iconic El Dorado place is gone. There aren’t many of these places left here, sadly.

I have many wonderful memories from the skating rink. It is sad that it is closing which now leaves bowling and movies only for kids. I am surprised that it has stayed open this long. It has been falling apart for several years now.

While @ work nearby it didn’t appear to be too many people at the party… Kinda sad. Found out this weekend, as well, that another “west side” icon had shut down- Beene Lumber (Moore Lumber) to those older residents (like myself). Was always so cool to a little boy to get to go in those big and long ‘tunnels’ to get your wood.

Wow, I can’t believe The Crystal Palace is closing. Yes, I am dating myself as well. I remember the Dance Competitions there on Sunday Nights, Where I would drive my 198…… Ford Bobcat from Urbana, just to get there. Breakdancing was the deal, and yes, I won a few. Sad to here this, but I hope that it is replaced with something that the young people can use, and years from now, remember that spot as a place of happier times.

I was in El Dorado recently visiting family, didn’t seem to be many businesses catering to the younger crowd, maybe someone could start a drive to get local businesses to sponcer skate night, dance night, band night, etc…
