Not the judge, nor the attorney, nor the defendant himself could figure out who let Demarcus White out of jail prior to his appearance in Union County Circuit Court this morning.
Judge Hamilton Singleton was perplexed when White took the stand in street clothes rather than a jail jumpsuit after having placed an order during the defendant’s previous court appearance that he could not bond out until he was admitted to the Smarter Sentencing Program.
White responded that the sheriff let him out upon Singleton’s questioning.
Minutes later a representative of SSP realized the mistake, explaining that she has signed him out previous to his first court date for assessment and later returned him to jail. Following White’s second court appearance she believes the Union County Sheriff’s Office read her signature for a second time believing it was a new signature and without noting the judge’s order.
