Arkansas Catholic priest removed

In light of an allegation of child abuse the Catholic Diocese of Little Rock removed Father Laurent Demets from the St. Michael Church in Cherokee Village, according to Arkansas Catholic.

On Nov. 7 Demets was accused of slapping a child in the St. Michael Church where the St. Pio de Pietrelcina Latin Mass Community — which he established in 2009 — practices. The abuse does not involve sexual misconduct, according to a release from the Diocese.

Demets admitted to the slap and the incident was reported to the State of Arkansas Hotline for Crimes in accordance with law. Effective Nov. 9 Demets was removed from his position by Bishop Anthony B. Taylor.

“In the meantime, the Latin Mass Community will celebrate Mass in English with the parish community of St. Michael until such time as the Rev. Eric Flood, district superior for the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, is able to provide a new chaplain for the community,” according to the release.
