FLDS leader convicted on two counts sexual assault

More than three years after the raid on a west Texas compound that resulted in the arrests of 12 men for bigomy and sexual assault, Warren Jeffs, a leader in the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, was today found guilty of two counts of sexual assault.

He will later be tried on one count of bigomy, according to CNN.

Jeffs, who was accused of sexually assaulting the 15-year-old and 12-year-old girls he took as his “spiritual wives,” — the former of whom he fathered a child with — explained that his church believes polygamy is the way into Heaven.

To the four and half hours of testimony on behalf of the prosecution, Jeffs — acting as his own attorney — called only one witness to the stand who spoke for 10 minutes on the history of the church. Later, during his closing argument, Jeffs spoke three words in the half an hour he was given: “I am peace.”

According to CBS, the seven men convicted of the 12 arrested received prison sentences between six and 75 years.
