Paving the Way — George Garten, on right, President of the El Dorado Leadership Class 2008, and other members of the class, presents a check in the amount of  $19,842 to Grady Tracy, center, Administrator of Development at Champagnolle Landing, on Friday to help with the cost of a new parking lot to expand parking at Champagnolle Landing.  Garten, stated that the Leadership Class made a decision to use their fund raising (Motorcycle Poker Run and Donkey Basketball) efforts to benefit the Senior Citizens of Union County and committed to provide the funds for additional parking at Champagnolle Landing.

Senior Tea — The first annual Seasoned Senior Tea was hosted by Mary Ezell Wallace (kneeling second from the right, first row) at the Wallace Estate, located at 3701 Calion Road in El Dorado on Thursday afternoon. The Tea purpose was for seniors to gather, share stories, laugh, and enjoy delicious Seasoned Tea. The Wallaces are 1 year new to the community by way of California where they lived the past 30 years. Mary Wallace is originally from El Dorado.

Students of Linda Roper’s Deep Aqua class kick their legs high in the air while doing water aerobics in the Health Works Fitness Center pool on Thursday morning. The class is open to anyone who wishes to join, and meets Monday-Thursday 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 in the pool at Health Works.

Tour of Science

Kindergarten students from Megan Dame’s class had the opportunity to tour the science projects of the kindergartner – 4th grade Hugh Goodwin Elementary students, Thursday, at the TAC House in El Dorado. The top 3 winners from the 3rd and 4th grades go on to compete for the regional title at the campus of SAU in Magnolia, Arkansas.

A retirement reception was held for South Arkansas Regional Airport Manager Gary Harrell on Tuesday at the SARA-Goodwin Field. Harrell, who will officially retire this Friday, has been apart of SARA for 25 years and became the Manager of SARA in 1990.  Top left photo, Harrell reflects on the 25 years of memories from the control tower at SARA. Quorum Court appoints new county treasurer

The Union County Quorum Court on Thursday appointed Shelly Kuhn to fill the vacancy in the Union County Treasurer’s Office. Linda Morgan, who had for decades filled that office, died earlier this month.

Kuhn retired as the Union County Tax Assessor in 2000.

Kuhn’s term will expire on Dec. 31 of this year, and she is not eligible to run for the position.

Finishing touch

A sign painter put the finishing touch on the water tower on Elm Street near downtown El Dorado. Crews have been working on the tower for months, cleaning and painting the interior and exterior of the structure.

Heading to Mardi Gras

I’ll be in New Orleans until Thursday, so blog postings will be scarce. I will do my best to post some offerings from Mardi Gras. This will be my third year to participate in the largest festival on our continent. I expect it will be extra raucous since the Saints won the Super Bowl.

This snowman sits in front of the Christian Fellowship Church on South Washington in El Dorado. The snow is melting fast, and this guy likely won’t be around to see another day.

According to the Arkansas Forestry Commission on Champagnolle Road, El Dorado received 3 inches of snow from the winter storm that hit Thursday afternoon.
