El Dorado Police Officer Scott Harwell, who has been on the force for a little over a year, was severely injured at around 3 a.m. this morning when an alleged drunk driver struck the back of his vehicle.

Harwell, 35, was standing behind his unit after working a car/deer incident in front of the Power Zone gym when a Ford Escort driven by 24-year-old Tommy Ray Lacaze plowed into him, pinning the officer between Lacaze’s vehicle and his own.

Blue lights were flashing at the time, according to PD sources.

Harwell is in stable condition at the Medical Center of South Arkansas.

Proof that there is no “routine” calls for Police Officers. My thoughts and prayers go out to Officer Harwell and his family. Too bad it couldn’t have been the “alleged drunk driver” that was injured and not the officer just doing his job. All too often the innocent is the one injured while the impaired or intoxicated driver walks away without a scratch. This should be a reminder that we should always thank and appreciate those guys and gals who suit up to keep our town safe and secure.

What a tragic and senseless accident. My heart and prayers are with Officer Harwell. Police officers go to their jobs every day knowing they could be risking their lives for the benefit of their community. God.bless them.
