Nudist invades Wal-Mart — UPDATE

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

I couldn’t resist posting this item from the El Dorado Police reports:

Last Friday at 5:30 a.m., officers were dispatched to the Wal-Mart Supercenter after employees reported that a white male — naked and covered in mud — was on the property. The report doesn’t specify whether the man had been inside the store.

A short time after being arrested and released on this incident, the man was apprehended again, only this time near a woman’s home sitting in a creek bed.

The woman said that she heard someone beating on her door at approximately 1 p.m. Saturday, and told police that the man began throwing rocks at her home. He then began threatening her and refused to leave the property.

The report doesn’t note whether or not the man was nude during the harassment episode. One can only hope he wasn’t.

**UPDATE** The man was arrested after the second incident as well and has since bonded out of jail.

World reacts to death of music icon

Friday, June 26th, 2009

Following are a few newspapers from this morning that pay tribute to a man who many say changed the face of modern music. I am still in shock.

MORE: Celebrity news site TMZ is reporting that a close member of Michael Jackson’s family has told them that Jackson received a daily injection of a synthetic narcotic similar to morphine — Demerol — and yesterday he received a shot at 11:30 a.m.

Family members are saying the dosage was “too much” and that’s what caused his death, according to TMZ. Click here for the latest.

I am still in shock. Michael Jackson, the ultimate icon of American popular music, has died of an apparent heart attack this afternoon at the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. Crowds are gathering in cities all over the world to remember Michael.

I just remember him as a man who stole popular culture and made it his own — not the person who had become the subject of so much ridicule. I truly feel, above all, that he should be remembered as a music genius who had the ability to transform ideas and thoughts into some of the most profound lyrics and beats that the world has ever seen.

Michael’s death, in many ways, is not completely unexpected. But it is still disturbing none-the-less. Much like with the passing of Elvis Presley, the world of music has lost an icon. Rest in peace, Michael.

El Dorado, Argentina? Say what?

googmaps

argentina

Go ahead, try to find directions to or from El Dorado, Ark., on Google Maps. At least on my computer, it directs me to Argentina, or just flat out says there is no such place as El Dorado, Ark.

This could be a problem for folks wanting to map their routes here. I know there are other map finders, but lots of people use Google.

Weird, isn’t it? Maybe we don’t really exist. Maybe this is all a dream….

The official lineup for MusicFest 2009 has been announced. For me, Blues Traveler stands out well beyond the rest. My senior year in high school, “Run Around” was the song. And I can’t wait to hear it played live in downtown El Dorado.

Also, if you are a diehard tv junkie like myself, you will know that BT front man John Popper sang the theme to “Roseanne” during that show’s final season.

Look for more in Tuesday’s News-Times.

Note, the photo in the upper left is a group shot of Blues Traveler.

Fresh start

Monday, June 15th, 2009

I’m back up and running, finally. Last week I just didn’t have time for any posts. When things get busy, my online time runs thin.

Expect a big announcement today concerning Musicfest. I’ll have it posted here soon.

Also, sources say that South Arkansas Community College is about ready to announce its new president.

The cause of death is unknown at this time. Pieroni served as sheriff for 14 years, retiring in 1992 at the age of 60. Look for more in Friday’s News-Times.

**UPDATE** I’m told that Pieroni died after a “lengthy illness.”

Now I’m not saying that this car isn’t one of the most awesome things I’ve ever seen, because it is. But I don’t really like footing the bill for the U.S. Air Force’s latest recruiting gimmick.

The winged-branch of the military has actually created two highly customized cars — the first car is a white Ford Mustang called “X-1″ and the other, seen above, is a black Dodge Challenger called “Vapor.”

No word on just how much these cars cost, but I’m guessing upwards of about a million each. As one blogger pointed out, the recruits likely won’t be able to drive these hotties, so what’s the point? Click here for more.

I’ll be heading over to South Arkansas Community College today to cover Dr. Joseph F. Shannon, dean of instruction at Panola College in Carthage, Texas, who is one of five finalists for the SouthArk presidential position.

The event begins at 1:45 p.m. in the SouthArk Library.

The hope is that a new president can be chosen before the end of June. The other finalists are visiting campus the rest of this week and next. They are: Dr. Linda A. Allen, vice president of academic affairs at Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, Iowa, who will be in town tomorrow;

Dr. Barbara R. Jones, dean of instruction at Louisiana Delta Community College in Monroe, La., who will visit on Monday; Dr. Jeremy P. McMillen, associate vice president of instruction and academic education at Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas, who will visit on Tuesday;

And Dr. Johnny M. Moore, vice president of student affairs at Indian River State College in Fort Pierce, Fla., who will visit on Wednesday.

All forums will be held at the same time as today’s. Students, college employees and “invited members of the community” are urged to attend.

El Dorado Police Officer Scott Harwell, who has been on the force for a little over a year, was severely injured at around 3 a.m. this morning when an alleged drunk driver struck the back of his vehicle.

Harwell, 35, was standing behind his unit after working a car/deer incident in front of the Power Zone gym when a Ford Escort driven by 24-year-old Tommy Ray Lacaze plowed into him, pinning the officer between Lacaze’s vehicle and his own.

Blue lights were flashing at the time, according to PD sources.

Harwell is in stable condition at the Medical Center of South Arkansas.

Look for more in Tuesday’s News-Times.
