Apparently some Jewish and Muslim folks are hacked off because the new flu-strain is being called “swine flu.” In their cultures and religions, pigs are thought to be unclean and are not eaten.
Well, it is swine flu, so what else are you gonna call it?
One Israeli official suggested “Mexican flu.” Yeah, well, no one is sure if it originated in Mexico, and I would think the term “Mexican flu” would be offensive to, say, EVERY PERSON IN MEXICO OR FROM MEXICO!
Has it really boiled down to this? We have to create new names for our diseases so as not to offend anyone? Are folks really this thin-skinned? The name “swine flu” does not target any specific race or religion. It is simply calling the disease what it is, a form of pig flu.
