It’s a sad day for me. John Madden is to football what the State of Liberty is to the United States. The man is football.
I remember during the Cowboys heyday listening to Madden and Pat Summerall (another football great) call the plays.
Madden had a special insight that no other announcer will ever have. I’m too young to remember his days as the Super Bowl-winning head coach of the Oakland Raiders, but I know from the highlight reels that he put as much passion into that job as he did in broadcasting.

An interesting aside about Madden: He would not fly. He rode around the country from stadium to stadium in a large motor coach dubbed “Madden Cruiser.”
