I have been out sick for most of the week, so that’s why posts have been sparse. Sorry, folks. At least I’m out of bed and among the living now. Expect more posts to come.

Friday, January 30th, 2009Snatch and grab
Friday, January 23rd, 2009My car was broken into today at the News-Times parking lot — in broad morning light. Last night, someone broke a co-worker’s car window, as well the window of a truck parked at the gas station across the street from the News-Times.
Stolen: My GPS and iPod.
Broken: My passenger side window.
This is only part of a rash of car burglaries around town. If you have anything in your car that you don’t want stolen, take it out now.
Whoever is doing this is getting more and more bold. Police say they are stepping up patrols.
Beware that burglaries are rising.
Made it back
Thursday, January 22nd, 2009I’m back in El Dorado after a 13-hour car ride last night. I’m still exhausted, but the trip was worth it. I’m still updating the Inauguration Blog because Internet access in D.C. was so scarce. You would think a major world capital could provide WiFi service.
Inauguration comments
Friday, January 16th, 2009Since, for some reason, readers can’t make comments on the actual inauguration blog, please leave them on this post, or other inauguration-related posts on the main page.

ADG rolls out inauguration blog
Friday, January 16th, 2009
My D.C. travel partner Jennifer Godwin’s blog at the Democrat-Gazette can be accessed by clicking here.
And, don’t forget about my own inaugural blog here. Bookmark both.
Oh, and I sort of stole and modified Jennifer’s “Following 44.” Mine is “Covering 44.” Just wanted to give credit where credit is due.
Jet crashes into Hudson River
Thursday, January 15th, 2009
This video frame grab image taken from WNBC-TV shows a US Airways aircraft that has gone down in the Hudson River in New York, Thursday. Miraculously, no one was killed, according to authorities. (AP Photo/WNBC-TV) Birds flew into the jet’s engines, causing the crash, officials said.

Man on Fire
Thursday, January 15th, 2009
Photo and text by News-Times photographer Larry Singer.
Recently, while taking pictures of circus performers at the municipal auditorium, I had the opportunity to shoot a fire eater known professionally as “Bacon.”
What was unusual to me about Bacon’s technique was every time he would ignite one of the two metal rods he would raise to his mouth to demonstrate his fire eating skills, his hand caught fire and he shook it a few times to extinguish the flames.
I have only one frame of his hand ablaze, so I thought I would share it with you.
Local auto dealers feeling economic crunch
Wednesday, January 14th, 2009
News broke this weekend that Murphy Motors in El Dorado would be shuttering its doors in February. Now, Daniel Reap Chevrolet in Smackover could be next. Owner Mike Reap told me via telephone today that “we haven’t decided yet if we’re going to close,” but “it’s not looking very good.”
Business is bad for dealerships all over the country right now, especially those who sell GM products.
Daniel-Reap Chevrolet employs 10 and has been in business for more than 70 years.

Chemical spill contained on U.S. 63
Monday, January 12th, 2009An 18-wheeler hauling sulphuric acid for the Groendyke company overturned this afternoon on U.S. 63 just east of El Dorado, spilling several hundred gallons of the dangerous chemical onto the side of the road. The spill was quickly contained using soda ash, according to the Union County Office of Emergency Management.
The driver wasn’t seriously injured, and no other vehicles were involved.
Authorities are still working to clear the wreckage. Look for more, including a photo, in Tuesday’s News-Times.
Hail to the chief
Monday, January 12th, 2009I hope all of you have had a chance to check out my Inauguration Blog. Posts on the main page may be sparse this week as I devote most of my attention to that site.
I’m chronicling the trip on the Inauguration Blog and want all of you to be involved.
I will do my best to bring you other news this week, though. I’m leaving Saturday for D.C. and will return next Thursday, blogging all the way.
Fourth anniversary of devastating storm
Friday, January 9th, 2009On Jan. 12, 2005, just before midnight, the skies over Union County unleashed several decades of pent up fury, spreading a path of destruction from Junction City to Lawson — 26 miles as the crow flies. That’s how long the swath of damage was from the powerful F3 tornado.
The storm spared nothing in its path.
To commemorate the event, and to kick off a special page called “The Archive,” where previous work from the News-Times will be featured, I bring you the one year anniversary piece I wrote in 2006, along with the original articles and photographs that were taken the day after the storm hit.

Lion Oil grows as others cut jobs
Friday, January 9th, 2009
I’m heading over to speak with Paul Fisher, plant manager at Lion Oil, this afternoon about how his facility is coping with the stagnant economy. Apparently the answer is “very well, thank you.”
Lion is hiring workers and continuing large construction projects.
I will have all of the particulars in an upcoming article for the News-Times. Just keep in mind that our local economy isn’t all bad.
Other than that, it’s been a pretty slow day. Anyone heard anything good? Let me know.
