Happy Halloween

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Hope your Halloween is going well. Currently, we’re being tricked here, as the technology gods have made it so that I cannot upload photos to the blog.

I had planned on posting some photos this morning from my trip. Hopefully things will be fixed soon.

More to come.

Early voting numbers top 5,000

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

And folks are still lining up. One local official has predicted as many as 7,500 could cast their ballots before election day.

Quite impressive, I’d say.

Early voting at the Union County Courthouse continues through Monday.

Back from vacation

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

I’m getting settled in after a trip to Savannah, Ga., Asheville, N.C., Atlanta and Nashville.

And there is a lot to catch up on. Give me time and I’ll have the blog back in ship shape soon.

12-point elk killed by El Dorado resident

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Former El Dorado City Council member Mike Meadows stopped by the News-Times Friday afternoon to show off the 12-point Elk he killed while hunting in Colorado.

The Elk, Meadows said, scored 370 points on the Boone and Crockett System. The animal weighed around 800 pounds and Meadows said it was captured in the San Juan National Forest – Wilderness
Area.

He plans on hanging his prize on the wall. Nice going, Mike!

Early Voting Numbers

Friday, October 24th, 2008

As of 9:55 a.m. today, 2,432 people had taken part in early voting in the county clerk’s office at the Union County Courthouse.

As the day goes on, the line seems to grow. I saw chairs in the large entrance hall in the courthouse, which were apparently placed for those who cannot stand for long periods of time.

It appears that early voting may be very important this election, not only in our county, but all across the nation.

Rainy Thursday Morning

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

I’m blogging a little for my cube buddy, John, while he enjoys himself traveling around.
Today I will be in court quite a bit, but if I hear anything interesting, I’ll be sure to share.
If you hear anything interesting, you can share as well.

No time to blog

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

It’s been a hectic couple of days, which I’m sure you will know if you’ve read the paper. I’ve been pulling double duty covering the Smackover School District’s crisis.

Also, I’m leaving for Savannah and Atlanta, Ga., tomorrow, then on to the Carolinas.

Hopefully I’ll have time to post something while I’m gone. I’ve asked a coworker to keep things rolling in my absence.

Thanks for being patient, and I’m sorry the posting has been slim lately. Stay with us.

Early begins voting today

Monday, October 20th, 2008

KATV reporter attacked in home

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Anne Pressly, a reporter for KATV Channel 7 in Little Rock, was stabbed and beaten Sunday night inside her Little Rock home, the Arkansas Times blog is reporting.

With violent crime on the rise recently in Little Rock, this is just another frightening addition. Pressly’s condition is not good, all reports indicate.

And you complain about living in El Dorado

Friday, October 17th, 2008

From the Arkansas Times Blog:

The overnight LRPD report includes:

Robbery of the Cupid’s Lingerie/etc. store at 3920 W. 65th St. about 3 a.m. today; robbery of the Shell Super Stop at 16900 Cantrell shortly after midnight today; a midnight arrest of a man who’d beaten a woman at the State Fair, apparently because she’d refused to buy marijuana from him; and an attempted carjacking yesterday afternoon of a woman parked near the Statehouse Convention Center. (This would be broad daylight.) She screamed, he fled toward the River Market.

As they used to say on Hill Street Blues, be careful out there.

Finally!

Fall weather is here. Hooray!

Ballot information

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

I’ve decided to create a special page detailing the various initiatives and referendums that you will see on your ballot when you head to the polls.

Click here for access. You can also access this information by clicking the “Ballot information” link under the “Pages” column at the top of this blog.

Chemtura rumor untrue

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

The rumor that’s slowly circulating around town about layoffs at Chemtura is not true. Patty Cardin, a spokesman for the company, confirmed Thursday that the rumor is false.

“We’ve been hearing that, too, and we’re not quite sure where it’s coming from,” Cardin said. “But I can tell you that I’ve checked with all levels of management, and there are no plans for layoffs at Chemtura.”

Southern Arkansas Exposure — UPDATE 2

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

Janine Turner, from “Northern Exposure” fame, will speak at 2 p.m. 4:30 p.m. today inside the Callaway Theater at the South Arkansas Arts Center. She plans to discuss her career in the movies, on television and on stage, according to a news release.

Turner is also speaking at South Arkansas Community College tonight. The event begins at 7 p.m. inside the gym. Both events are free and open to the public.

Oh, and if you don’t remember Northern Exposure, it was that quirky show about life in Alaska.

Before Sarah Palin.

**UPDATE** THE EVENT HAS BEEN PUSHED UP TO 4:30 p.m. Turner is running late, I’m told.

**UPDATE 2** THE EVENT AT THE ARTS CENTER HAS BEEN CANCELLED. Janine Turner is still scheduled to appear at South Ark at 7 p.m., however.
