Sarah, Tina; Tina, Sarah

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

A blogger commented that Tina Fey, former SNL queen, looks a lot like Republican vice presidential nominee and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. One hopes that Fey will make a guest appearance on the Sept. 13 SNL premiere to play Palin.

Hideous outfit costs Cindy McCain $300k

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

That’s right, folks. Cindy McCain, wife of Republican presidential nominee John McCain, spent between $299,100 and $313,100 on one outfit during the Republican National Convention. Most of the cost went toward a pair of 3 karat diamond earbobs.

How wasteful. But she and John McCain feel the pain of average Americans. Actually, I’m not sure any politician feels the pain of average Americans. Click here for more.

Storm perspective

Speck offers this great cartoon — a way to remember Gustav. It does seem that this time around, even though Gustav was nowhere near as nasty as Katrina, that the government was better prepared.

Let’s hope it stays that way.

Some area schools closed due to rural flooding

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

The following schools are closed due to road and bridge flooding in rural areas:

• Bearden Public Schools
• Crossett Public Schools
• Hamburg Public Schools
• Hampton Public Schools

The El Dorado High School is closed today due to electrical issues. An underground electrical box was flooded, according to the district.

U.S. 167 north of Hampton still has water lapping its edges but is passable.

Sarah Palin delivers excellent speech — UPDATE

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

The Republican National Convention looked tired before Wednesday night’s appearance by Alaska Governor and vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin. She livened things up.

She is a great speaker (although she did not write the speech). I particularly thought that her quip about soccer moms and pit bulls was funny. What’s the difference between the two? she asked. “Lipstick.”

There are concerns about Palin, however. For one, there’s “Troopergate,” an incident where Palin allegedly tried to fire her ex-brother in law, a state trooper. Palin then, allegedly, asked the head of Alaska’s state troopers to step down after he refused to fire the man. The results of the investigation will be released just before November’s general election.

I’m anxious to hear what John McCain will say tonight.

UPDATE: Click here for an interesting series of photos featuring Palin published by the New York Daily News.

Seven-year-old Piper Palin, the youngest daughter of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, leaned in to get a better look at Sen. John McCain as he hugged her sister Bristol, 17, at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport on Wednesday. McCain paused to talk with Bristol and her boyfriend, Levi Johnson, then greeted Willow, 14 (who held her brother Trig), Piper and Track, 19, who is to be deployed to Iraq later this month. (information from the Minneapolis Star Tribune).

It’s over

Well, it will be by tomorrow. Gustav is gone. I’m exhausted.
